Earlier this year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named both the 2017 Elantra and the 2017 Santa Fe as "Top Safety Pick +" award winners, a tacit recognition of Hyundai's continued dedication to automotive safety.
To receive the top safety designation, the vehicles needed to earn "Good" ratings in all five IIHS crash tests: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. They also had to receive an "Advanced" or "Superior" rating for front crash prevention, with the headlights meriting "Acceptable" or "Good" ratings.
Only Elantra sedans and Santa Fe SUVs built that were after March 2016 and offer both optional front crash prevention and specific headlights received the award.
