IONIQ 5 Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an IONIQ 5 cost?
A base model 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5 SE Standard Range has a starting MSRP of $41,450. Mid-range SE and SEL start at 45,500 and $47,450 respectively, while the top-of-line Limited starts at $52,600 for RWD (add $3,900 for AWD).
What is the range of a Hyundai IONIQ 5?
The full-charge range varies with trims and options. The SE Standard Range model (new to 2023) with 168 hp has a 220 mile range. The Upper trims all have 303-mile range with 225 hp RWD or the 320 hp AWD offers 266 miles with the SE, and drops to 256 for the SEL and Limited trims. These are estimated ranges based on internal testing. Real world mileage will vary with options, driving conditions, the vehicle battery's condition, and even driving habits.
How much does it cost to charge a Hyundai IONIQ 5?
That's actually a complex question. Overnight home charging is the most convenient for most people. It depends on what you pay per kilowatt-hour (kWh). As of January 2023, average cost per kWh in Arizona is 14 cents (but can be higher depending on where you live), and the IONIQ 5 gets about 3.3 mi/kWh. So say, for each hundred miles you drive, it'll cost you about $4.24. If you drive about 1,000 miles a month, you're looking at around $42 a month. When you purchase a new 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5, you qualify for 2 years of FREE Electrify America 30-minute DC fast charging sessions. In Arizona, those stations normally charge 43 cents/kWh (or 31 cents/kWh for members) for DC fast charging.
What is the IONIQ 5 like to drive in the real world?
As changes to the 2023 did not affect driving performance other than a small uptick in AWD range and efficiency, Redline Reviews' video test drive impressions of the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 are still valid, noting, "Out on the highway here, the seats are comfortable, it's quiet, it's got amazing tech, great visibility, it's got that all wheel drive grip, instantaneous torque. This is exactly what I'm looking for - what a lot of people are looking for in an all electric crossover utility vehicle and it's very impressive. It's very impressive out on the road and out on the highway." During Redline's test drive, they took the IONIQ 5 AWD from 0 to 60 in 4.93 seconds! (Hyundai's official spec has 5.2 seconds.) They also noted that it DC charges among the fastest in its segment.
Does IONIQ 5 have a sun roof?
A sun roof is standard on the 2023 IONIQ 5 Limited.

How does the IONIQ 6 compare to the Tesla Model 3?
Of course, we think the IONIQ 6 is better than a Tesla Model 3, but don't take our word for it - here are some of the things MotorTrend had to say about the IONIQ 6 compared to the Tesla Model 3 in their EV Sedan Showdown after they'd driven both cars.
About driving the IONIQ 6, MotorTrend's Angus MacKenzie's impressions will resonate with those who are looking for a smooth, quite ride, as he declared the IONIQ 6 "drives with the quiet sophistication of a Mercedes-Benz." His comments on the Tesla's ride were less enthusiastic, stating about the Model 3, "There's too much tire and road noise infiltrating the cabin, and a myriad of buzzes and rattles over broken pavement are testament to Tesla's poor build quality."
Regarding the interior, Motortrend reports: "Rear legroom in the Hyundai is immense in contrast to that of the Model 3..." and "The fit and finish of the IONIQ 6 makes the Model 3 look cheap and downmarket."
But what about tech? It appears that Tesla hasn't really been putting a lot into R&D lately. MotorTrend relates their experience driving the Model 3, saying, "...we've found Tesla's optimistically named Autopilot driver assistance system to be buggy and unreliable, occasionally shutting down without warning ..." Compare that to their experience with the IONIQ 6: "...what it claims to do it does, and does well. SmartSense basically offers Level 2.5 autonomy, with neat features..."
As far as range goes, it's a bit of an apples-to-oranges match up, as Hyundai has positioned their longest range model on the IONIQ 6 RWD 225 hp single motor, with the official EPA estimate of 361 miles, while you have to step up to a dual-motor AWD Tesla to capture their longest range of 353 miles. As MotorTrend puts it, "… if you're not worried about winning traffic light grands prix and don't need AWD, the single-motor IONIQ 6 RWD Long Range looks as if it could go the distance with the dual-motor Model 3 Long Range."
We'll give you an update on price comparisons as soon as IONIQ 6 pricing information becomes available.
